Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has said he is open to discuss whether France’s nuclear Arsenal could help protect his European allies when he warned that Europe should take the threat of Russia seriously.
France and the UK are Europe’s only two nuclear power.
“Our nuclear deterrent protects us: It is complete, sovereign, French through and through,” Macron said in his television speech.
“But equivalent to the historical call from the future German Chancellor, I have decided to open the strategic debate on the protection of our allies on the European continent through our (nuclear) deterrence,” Macron said.
The German Chancellor-I-Event at Friedrich Merz has questioned whether NATO would remain in its “current form” by June and advocate for conversations with France and the UK to expand their nuclear protection.
France’s nuclear deterrence strategy has so far been defensive and aimed at protecting the country’s own vital interests.
In his television speech, Macron also said that France should spend more on the defense and would continue to help Ukraine. He recognized voters’ concerns about Russia and the new US administration’s increase in international order.
He said he would think the United States “will remain by our side” while adding that Europe should be prepared if it was no longer the case.
“You are, I know, legitimately worried about current events that are disturbing the world order,” Macron told voters.
“Russia has become a threat to France and Europe,” he said, adding that “to see and do something would be madness.”
European countries are encrypted to increase defense spending and maintain support for Ukraine after President Donald Trump froze US military aid to Kiev and caused doubts about Washington’s commitment to his European NATO allies.
Nuclear deterrent
Macron also said he hoped “to convince and deter the president of the United States” from imposing higher tariffs on European imports.
In the early days of the Cold War, former President Charles de Gaulle developed a nuclear deterrent, designed to be completely independent of the two dominant powers of the time, the Soviet Union and the United States.
France’s nuclear deterrent is air and sea-based with Rafale fighters and nuclear submarines capable of striking at all times on the teaching of the French president alone.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, the United States and Russia now possess approximately 88 percent of the world’s total nuclear weapons inventory. France has estimated 290 nuclear war heads, while the United Kingdom has 225, says it.
Macron told Portuguese Media over the weekend that he could open a debate about France’s nuclear deterrence, which the right-right leader Marine Le Pen immediately criticized.
In his television address on the threshold of a crucial EU summit on the defense, Macron also said that France would spend more on defense – though he did not specify how much. He said there would be no tax increases to finance it, but hard choices had to be made.
His push to increase French defense spending will not be easy as his government is struggling to empty an irregular budget deficit.
Macron’s comments come as Britain and Germany both announce plans for major increases in defense expenses.
Macron’s address comes in the midst of a flurry of European diplomacy to strengthen support for Ukraine and repair ties between Washington and Kyiv after a violent meeting between Trump and President Volodymy Zelenskiy in the Oval Office last week.
France and Britain aim to end a peace plan with Ukraine, possibly “within a few days”, to present to the United States, while also working to build bridges between Washington and Kyiv before possible conversations in the United States, diplomats have been told Reuters.
