Rawalpindi police arrested a man who was caught digging a girl’s grave in a local cemetery, allegedly to perform a black magical ritual, officials said on Thursday.

The suspect identified as Yaseen Bukhari was found with objects often associated with occult practice, including a clay similar to a human upper body, seven amulets and seven iron nails wrapped in line, police say.

Bukhari, resident of Adhowal Village, reportedly told police that he followed instructions from a spiritual healer who claimed that revealing buried objects would cure his bedridden wife.

“The suspect was caught red -handed with ritualist objects while abolishing the grave,” said Under Inspector Aslam Parvez, who filed the complaint. “His original statement suggests that he acted out of desperation after not finding a medical solution for his wife’s illness.”

Police were warned by the father of the deceased girl who noticed that someone was manipulating with the grave shortly after the funeral.

Officers arrived at the stage and found that Bukhari was digging near the place with a small spade. A plastic bag containing Effigy, amulets and nails were extracted from his possession.

Authorities said the suspect had been indicted in accordance with section 297 of Pakistan’s Criminal Code, which criminalizes interference in burial sites.

He was later awarded the bail by the court as the offense is fifth.
