California stands on Thursday with Washington in court over President Donald Trump’s deployment of US troops in Los Angeles after protesters again went out on the streets of major cities to protest Trump’s immigration crop.
About 700 US marines will be on the streets of Los Angeles before Thursday or Friday, the military said to support up to 4,000 National Guard troops to protect federal property and federal agents, including on immigration attacks.
Trump’s decision to send troops to Los Angeles on objections from California’s governor Gavin Newsom has given rise to a national debate on the use of the military on American soil and further polarized the country.
Street protests have broken out in several cities besides Los Angeles, including New York, Chicago, Washington and San Antonio, Texas.
A federal judge in San Francisco will hear arguments on Thursday as part of California’s trial against Trump. The state is requesting a temporary restriction order to block troops’ participation in law enforcement activities.
California ultimately wants a court ruling that returns its national guard to state control and declares Trump’s action was illegal.
LA protests broke out last Friday in response to a number of immigration attacks. Trump, for his side in the National Guard, called on Saturday and then called the Marines Monday.
“Los Angeles was safe and healthy for the past two nights. Our great national guard with a little help from the marines enabled the LA police to effectively do their jobs,” posted Trump on social media on Thursday. “They all worked well together, but without the military Los Angeles would be a crime scene that we haven’t seen for years.”
State and local leaders dispute that Trump has only escalated tension with an unnecessary deployment of federal troops, while Democrats have nationally condemned his action as authoritarian.
Trump performs a campaign promise to deport immigrants and use powerful tactics that are in line with the norm-breaking political style that got him chosen twice.
Los Angeles endured on Wednesday on a sixth day of protests that have largely become peaceful, but occasionally punctured by violence, mostly contained for a few blocks.
In the center of LA, shortly before the second night of a curfew over an area of one square kilometer (2.5 square kilometers) on Wednesday night, police said protesters in one place threw commercial quality fireworks and rocks against officers.
Another group of nearly 1,000 protesters marsh peacefully through the center when police suddenly opened fire with less deadly ammunition in front of the town hall.
Marlene Lopez, 39, a native in Los Angeles, demonstrated when Flash Bangs exploded only a few meters away.
“I’m here because of the fact that our human rights are violated every day. If we give up it is over. We have to stand our land here in LA so the nation will follow us,” Lopez said.
An indefinite number of arrests were made, in addition to approx. 400 in previous days.
New York police said an unknown number of people had been taken into custody on Wednesday after saying Tuesday that 86 had been taken into custody, 34 of which were arrested and charged while the others received a criminal court.
The protests will be expanded on Saturday when more activist groups have planned more than 1,800 anti-trump demonstrations across the country. That day, thought and other armored vehicles will rumble down the streets of Washington, DC, in a military parade that marks the US Army’s 250 -year anniversary and coincides with Trump’s 79 -year birthday.
Marines trained for crowd control
US marines will join the National Guard troops on the streets of Los Angeles within 48 hours, officials said Wednesday and would be authorized to detain anyone who disturbs immigration managers on attacks or protesters confronting federal agents.
A battalion of 700 Marines had concluded education specific to the LA mission, including De-Scaling and Crowd Control, the US northern command said in a statement.
The marines would join the National Guard under the authority of a federal law known as section 10, not to carry out civilian police work, but to protect federal officers and property, the military said.
“Section 10 forces can temporarily withhold an individual under specific circumstances, such as stopping an assault, to prevent damage to others or to prevent interference with federal staff performing their duties,” the northern command said.
The US Army Major General Scott Sherman, who commands the Task Force for Marines and Guards, told journalists that the marines will not load their rifles with live ammunition, but they will wear live rounds.
