Robert Downey JR has given rise to a new – and potentially huge – theory among Marvel fans about Avengers: Judgment Day.
Last Saturday (July 26), the Superstar actor, who will produce Doctor Victor von Doom in the upcoming film, released a seemingly innocent video on Instagram.
For the most part, the footage shows Downey Jr, which hits games on one of his son’s (Indio Downey) songs on Spotify. Then A-Lister briefly hovers his phone camera over a couple of Marvel comics before turning it to the aforementioned melody.
These are the comics that have whipped Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans for a madness.
Well, one of them anyway. The first cartoon we see is a copy of ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’, alias 12-Edition created by Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck and Bob Layton, who ran from May 1984 to April 1985. The fact that Downey JR reads the comic book for research purposes is no big surprise.

Given Downey JR, Tony Stark and his Superhero Alter-ego Iron Man played Iron Man in MCU between 2008 and 2019, some observers may think this is just a nod for the two iconic Marvel characters he wants to play at that time Avengers: Secret Wars Arriving in December 2027.
However, long-lasting Marvel fans read much more in it and have even created a new fan theory of Downey JR’s casting in Marvel-Phase 6 movie-a hypothesis that I will definitely hope is wrong. Potentially large spoilers immediately follow for the next two Avengers movies. Turn back now unless you really want to know what fans theorize about.
Does Robert Downey JR play two grades in Avengers: Doomsday?
For the uninitiated, ‘Iron Man: Legacy of Doom’ is a Four-Exse cartoon that contains another showdown between the named armored superhero and Doom. Okay, the latter is more commonly connected as an Archenemy by Fantastic Four, but he is also engaged in a few trips with Stark in Marvel Comics.
In fact, ‘Legacy of Doom’ is the third time they lock horns on the side. The first came in a two-part Iron Man story called ‘Doomquest’, which landed on the shelves in 1981, while the second took place in ‘The Doctor’s Passion’, another two-piece tale released in 1989.
Okay but what has this to do with Downey JR possibly to have a double role in Avengers 5 And its successor, which is already one of 2027’s most expected new films? Some fans believe that Downey Jr indicates he either plays Doom and an Iron Man -variant or confirms his downfall is A variant of Stark himself.
The latter is a theory circulated online ever since Downey JR was revealed to play downfall in MCU at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. In fact, some fans have asked why Marvel would hire Downey Jr to play Doom if he wasn’t an alternative universe’s sharp that hadn’t seen his mistake in his ways as McU’s Stark did, to darken and combine with his self-drive. Hello, Ironheart Already proven that magic and tech can mix, so it’s not like anyone like an evil Stark couldn’t figure out how to mix the two.

It is the second theory of Downey JR that potentially plays Doom and another version of Stark/Iron Man, but it has got me worried.
If – and that is a big if – Judgment Day Adapts an aspect of ‘Iron Man: Legacy of Doom’, we could have a situation where the aforementioned situation becomes reality. If it does, we could see Downey Jr’s Doom and a sharp variant that would also be portrayed by the A list, fight to show how powerful doom is and/or if Doom needs to acquire a tech that Stark has perfected.
The second option is that Downey JR will recreate his role as Stark/Iron Man in Secret wars. There have been mumblings that Chris Evans may return as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the sixth Avengers movie, which is reportedly invoiced as a celebration of each Marvel cartoons that ever exists before MCU reviews its soft reboot after-Secret wars. It includes 20 century Fox’s X-Men franchises, Sony’s three Spider-Man universes and MCU.
Should that prove to be the case, in Marvel’s eyes, it would not be an appropriate memorial day without Downey Jr’s Stark as part of it. After all, he started the comic Giant’s cinematic universe.
Nevertheless, to bring Downey Jr back as Stark in every form regrets his heartbreaking, yet heroic victim in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In my opinion it was appropriate, although bittersweet parting that he deserved and I would be disgust to see him return as Iron Man in Judgment Day and/or Secret wars Because of that. This is a fan theory that I do not want to see materialized.
Avengers: Judgment Day will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
