The landscape of college sports is very different from what it was just a few years ago in the middle of paying athletes.
With NIL offers that run violently, athletes now choose and choose schools simply based on where they can earn the most – and it is already injured at least one team.
Maryland Football Head coach Mike Locksley admitted that he had “lost my closet” solely because players paid during the 4-8 season.

“I own the fact that I lost my dressing room. And this is Coach Locks, The Locker Room King, who tells you this landscape, I had to choose between paying young players who came in or rewarding the older players who have been through the fire, three cheers, and I tried to do both with limited resources. Locksley told ESPN this week.
Locksley is hardly a novice in college sports. He goes into his seventh season in Maryland and 10. However, he is a novice in the Nil era and he had to make some changes.

“You go outside my dressing room 1753280765 And I have a sign that says, ‘Leave your Louis belts, let your accounts and your car keys outside this dressing room, because in here we will all pay the same price for success or failure,’ ‘Locksley continued.’ If I have to put my desk in that dressing room I will. A valuable lesson learned. “
“I call this a year of vulnerability for me because I have been torn over what to say about our team when people ask; but I don’t know what type of team we have yet,” he added. “Some people who train is like a bad thing to say, ‘I don’t know.’ But that’s a good thing that I don’t know.
Terrapins had won three consecutive bowl matches in so many of the previous seasons that combined to go 23-16 from 2021 to 2023. Locksley had completely reversed a program that went 3-9 in his first season there.

However, the dressing room in the last season was obviously clear.
Maryland opens their season on August 30 against Florida Atlantic. Six of their first eight matches are at home.
