A massive fire that broke out early Saturday morning near an oil refinery in Karachi’s Korangi area, continued to rage for more than 12 hours, according to rescuers.
The fire broke out during a deep excavation in a place located 1,800 feet underground. Seven fire departments have been deployed to tackle the fire, but authorities are still struggling to bring it under control.
According to a statement from Korangi police also confirmed that the fire started while drilling after groundwater in the Korangi Creek area.
No damage has been reported so far, and workers at the excavation site together with residents nearby have been evacuated in safety. However, the exact cause of the fire remains unclear where the authorities still investigate the incident.
The Edhi Foundation, a large charity in Pakistan, confirmed that an ambulance and volunteers were on stage, although no injuries have been reported.
Senior Superintendent of Police Tariq Nawaz along with other officers are present on site. Police added that the intensity of fire has increased, which resulted in the deployment of additional officers from nearby police stations.
Teams from Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) are also on stage and helps with the answer.
Sindh -Governor Kamran Khan Tesori expressed concern about the ongoing fire and urged Karachi -Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi to take quick action. The governor emphasized the need for immediate measures to contain the fire and ensure that helicopters are made available if necessary.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
