Rory McIlroy had a forgetful opening round at the US Open. The reigning Masters champion ended on Thursday at Oakmont on 4-over pairs.
While the disappointing day was something unusual for the pro golf player, he continued his pattern of evasive members of the media. The Nordirishman has not talked to the overall media since he took on the coveted green jacket in April at Augusta.

“I want to start this press conference with a question myself,” McIlroy said at Augusta National. “What should we all talk about next year?”
But after not talking to journalists at the PGA championship last month, McIlroy chose to give comments on the media after the first round of Oakmont. Instead, he bypassed journalists and spectators and went into Oakmont -Club House.

Golfers are not contractually obliged to talk to the media. Other major professional American sport leagues such as NFL and NBA require their players to talk to the press.

McIlroy’s Day started a strong start. At one point he was 2-under couple, but his fortunes took a quick turn down the stretch on the last nine.

McIlroy ended the opening round eight strokes behind JJ Spaun, which held the top location on the leaderboard.
When the US Open opens this weekend, McIlroy is expected to compete in the Ryder Cup. Since won at Augusta, McIlroy has finished being tied to 12. At the Zurich Classic and tied to 7th on Truist. His PGA championship performance also produced a disappointing finish.
