Max Scherzer seems to experience another setback

Max Scherzers Toronto Blue Jay’s debut ended earlier than many probably expected.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 45 seats before an apparent thumb injury forced him to leave the game after only three laps.

Blue Jays later said Scherzer was dealing with right lat tenderness.

The eight-time MLB All-Star seemed to be frustrated in Toronto-Dugout, presumably after he was told he would not take the haug to start the fourth inning.

After the game, Scherzer shared his belief that the real lat problem was related to his ongoing thumb problem. Wednesday, Jay’s manager John Schneider told journalists Scherzer “still went in the right direction.”

Scherzer has been treating some discomfort in the thumb since spring training. On Saturday, he suggested that the lingering question forced his body to overcompensate.

He suggested pushing past the third round in the game against Baltimore Orioles could have led to several problems.

“After the third round, I could just tell us we were in imminent danger,” Scherzer said. “If you throw through this and you continue to pitch like arm fatigue this will go.”

Scherzer also admitted that he did not feel very comfortable when he threw the bullpen before Saturday’s match.

“Today I warm up, I could feel my lat was tight. … let (schneider) know kind of before the game, ‘Hi, work with me here. Just know that something could happen,'” he said.

Scherzer has contested with several injuries throughout his career.

He looked up for Texas Ranger’s last season, but started the year on the wounded list when he recovered from back surgery. His debut from 2024 was further delayed by a nerve problem. Scherzer started nine starts last season.

Scherzer gave up three hits and a few earned races before leaving Saturday’s match. Blue Jay’s lost 9-5. The last game in the four-game series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Center.
