- The upcoming Mercedes-AMG EV could boast 1,000 hp
- It will be the first Mercedes-AMG product built from the bottom of
- Porsche, Audi and Xiaomi could finally have another fiery rival
Mercedes-AMG has teased its first electric ‘Super Sedan’ through a series of images released on its social media channels showing the big ones that impress four-door fastback wearing a thin camouflage.
Both the front and taillights have been inspired by the star design used on the upcoming CLA-there is causing something of a furore on social-mens the low sloping riding height and huge Aero-enhanced wheels denote its performance intentions.
Above all else, the design already separates from the slightly confusing Mercedes-Amgs Eqe and EQs-Mash-Up models that have arrived to date.
But the good news is that this is the tip of being the first dedicated, high-performance electric Mercedes-AMG product, complete with its very own platform (called AMG.EA) and internal adjusted electric engines.
Where AMG was once the last word in high performance combustion engines, without a doubt, topped with its amazing and violent natural aspirated 6.3-liter V8 (I personally owned one, and it was fantastic before the fuel bills financially destroyed me), it has not yet allowed its evil way with an electrified power training.
Reports suggest that the upcoming electric super sedan will use axial flux engines, which are much lighter and more energy -tight than the radial engines used in most of today’s high performance EVs.
According to Autocar, a total power of 1,000BHP and 1,000 lb-FT torque is quite feasible from a double-axial flux engine setup. But we’ll have to wait for a full reveal to find out.
However, this would bring it directly to the firing line of the Taycan Turbo GT, which is capable of smashing 0-62 km / h in just 2.3 seconds thanks to its 1,020BHP effect. It can also return impressive 347 miles on a single charge.
Analysis: Porsche will be tough to beat
Since the automotive industry changed towards an increasingly electric future, Mercedes-AMG has been reduced and turbocharged of its combustion engines as well as addition of plug-in hybrid settings to accommodate stricter emissions.
Talk to any AMG fan and they will probably admit that this has had a negative effect on the products that leave the famous Affalterbach factory. Let’s not get started with the expensive, bizarre-style and slightly disappointing Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 and EQS models.
But this latest project could be the first time we really see what the famous tuning arm for Mercedes-Benz can do when it gets its hands on the brand’s battery and motor technology, with the results finally able to take on Porsche and Audi’s power.
The former would probably be its closest rival as it has pushed its EV-Tech to the borders for years, with the Taycan Turbo GT without a doubt one of the most thinking and impressive high-performance electric vehicles I’ve ever been lucky enough to drive.
This is not good enough as an EV must be made with huge amounts of power, as so much work has to be done to translate it into usable, real performance.
The Taycan Turbo GT – complete with the Weissach pack that removes the rear seats and adds a firm carbon back wings in the pursuit of ease – is arguably too much for the road, but it redefines what it means to go fast.
The handling is exquisite, the feedback through the steering wheel Pure Porsche and the acceleration with overboost -enabled limit painful.
Launch control is so aggressive that the driver can only handle a handful of running before throwing the towel in … or vomiting. However, it can make even ham -fisted drivers look like the goat thanks to its seemingly infinite amounts of grip and poise.
But despite this, the market is still relatively slow for high -performance EVs, with the sale of Taycan reportedly falling by 49% by 2024. The poor residual values also knock consumer confidence to new cars.
Mercedes-AMG, coming into the game, has to help prove to the market that this is really the future of high-performance car driving based on the work of Audi, Porsche and Xiaomi (at least in China) already did.
What’s more, it will hopefully signal a return to AMG that does what it does best when left to its own devices … mainly creates phenomenal driver’s cars.
