Miami: Football legend Lionel Messi does not take the field to Inter Miami in their important Leagues Cup match against Pumas Unam.
The tip of the star has picked up a minor muscle injury, his coach said, adding that the footballer needs time to recover before he plays again.
The Argentine attacker suffered what Mascherano described as a “minor muscle injury” in his upper right leg under Miami’s victory over Necaxa last Saturday.
While there is no fixed schedule for Messi’s return, Mascherano Hopeful remained that the tip of the star would soon be back on the field.
“Within the bad news is the good news,” Mascherano told journalists.
“He usually comes back very well from injuries and first and foremost does it at speed so we will see. But clearly, because tomorrow he is not available. Then we will see how he is doing, how he progresses.”
Messi, who leads the league with 18 goals in MLS matches this season, helped guide Miami to the League Cup title in 2023 shortly after joining Hegre.
Inter Miami probably needs a win over Pumas in their last group step match to reach the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup, which includes teams from MLS and Mexico’s top department.
If Miami moves on to the knockout stage, Messi would have two weeks to recover before the quarterfinals.
Miami’s next MLS luminaire is scheduled for Sunday against Orlando.
