- Microsoft just reminded us that Windows 11 23H2 is losing support
- The last security update to 23h2 will be delivered in November
- Then you won’t get additional security fixes so you need to move to Windows 11 24h2 (or 25h2)
Microsoft has again reminded Windows 11 users who are still running the aging version 23H2 that they need to upgrade to a newer spin on us as the support is running out.
Yes, it’s not only Windows 10 that is getting support disconnected – it actually happens tomorrow – but also Windows 11 23h2, even if the support deadline is not so close to the latter.
As Microsoft makes it clear on its release Health Dashboard (as stained by Bleeping Computer): “Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 23H2 will continue to receive monthly security updates until November 11, 2025.”
Then there will no longer be any security updates delivered to Windows 11 23H2, so if you have not yet upgraded to version 24h2 (or 25h2), do so within the next month. (Although it is worth noting that many people have already had this upgrade pushed on them by Microsoft.
In fact, this is the fourth warning that Microsoft has issued this year on support that will cease to Windows 11 23H2, and it will be the last before the last cumulative update is delivered in November.
Analysis: Time to make a step
People who run Windows 11 23H2 are in pretty much the same boat as on Windows 10, in terms of not having any security updates in the future to be a bad thing. Without monthly updates for fixing security errors, version 23h2 will become vulnerable to exploitation, and as time goes on, potentially more and more compromise options will be open.
While it is understandable that some people may not have made jumped to 24h2 after hearing that it was a special buggy update in its initial stages, cases have not settled down now – and of course we have just had 25h2. However, you must first go over to version 24H2 before you are offered 25h2 – and the latter is a smaller upgrade anyway. In fact, they are both essentially the same, except for some small adjustments and the strange little feature addition with 25h2, but nothing worth shouting about that I have discussed before.
In any case, the time to get 24h2 is now upon us, though this is only the case for Windows 11 Home and Pro. Those on Enterprise and Education Editions of Windows 11 23H2 can stick to that version for another year as they receive support for November 10, 2026.
For those on Windows 10, it is also worth noting that you can also get extended support for October 2026, and you should take advantage of the free offer if you intend to stick to the older operating system.
