- Windows 11 24H2 gets new Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) Tool
- It will help Microsoft fix boot crash externally via Windows updates
- It is available in the Beta channel for all Windows Insiders
Microsoft is testing a Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) tool for fixing boot crashes remote, and it is now available for Windows Insiders in Beta Channel for 24H2, also ready to try the tool.
Part of the Windows Resilience Initiative, QMR aims to reduce the amount of downtime as a result of system errors and come into play when Windows 11 cannot start due to defective drivers or configurations.
Senior Program Manager Riddhi Ameser described the feature, first introduced by CEO Satya Nadella on Microsoft Ignite 2024, as a “Game Developer for Windows 11 devices facing boot problems.”
Windows 11 gets a new Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) feature
System defects can sometimes cause devices to get stuck in the Windows Recovery environment (re), explained ameses that can affect productivity severely. QMR enables automated corrections “to get users into a productive state without requiring complex manual intervention,” explains Ameser in a blog post.
Windows 11 Home devices will eventually have this feature enabled by default, but Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise Local, and it may be able to check if they want the feature to function within their organizations.
“If a Windows 11, Version 24H2 device encounters a critical failure that prevents normal trunk, it goes into Windows re,” Ameser explains. From there, the device is connected again to the network using Ethernet or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) for Microsoft to analyze the crash data and identify the fundamental cause of the problem. Microsoft then delivers a solution via Windows Update.
The initial release allows the administrators to enable or disable QMR, configure the scanning interval and the test to ensure emergency preparedness before full implementation.
The company asks early adopters to submit feedback to the tool under Recovering and Uninstalling> Fast Machine Restore To help improve QMR, but there is no word about general accessibility yet.
