Microsoft has warned users such as the Aveedote Note-Taging app is set to lose support for Windows 10 machines from October 14, 2025, and with this landmark comes an important software update.
From this deadline, Microsoft OneNote will be a read -only app, which means notes can be viewed but not edited or synchronized.
No further updates, bug fixes or security fixes will be provided in accordance with Windows 10, which will also lose support on October 14.

“As we continue to invest in a more secure, modern and skilled note experience, we consolidate our efforts in a single, more powerful OneNote on the Windows app,” wrote OneNote Product Manager Bola Soneye in a blog post that announced the news.
By streamlining OneNote, Microsoft promises faster delivery of new features, prolonged support and a “foundation for future innovation in OneNote.”
To move from the classic Windows 10 version of OneNote to the new OneNote on the Windows app, users need to sync their notes and then use the migration band in the app to ‘move to the latest version of OneNote’.
The new app can be downloaded from Microsoft Store for free, but users have to log in with work, school or personal accounts to unlock it.
The blog post also describes specific processes for business and education customers.
Looking ahead, Microsoft’s timetable has lots of items for OneNote, including a whole range of copilot-based improvements such as summary, questions and answers, voice tools, image and video support and audio listings.
The OneNote change is just part of a wider shift that happens as Windows 10 leaves room for Windows 11. Earlier in June 2025, Windows 11 capture finally caught Windows 10 (via Statcounter) before passing it a month later.
Soneye ended up calling on OneNote users to migrate now instead of leaving it until the last moment to avoid disturbances.
