Baseball Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins joined the ongoing discussion this week about the use of Torpedo bats that have taken the big leagues by storm after New York Yankees’ strong excursion during the opening weekend.
During a performance on Outkick’s “The Ricky Cobb Show”, Jenkins, 82, discussed how torpedo bats have become the latest innovation in the sport and could favor men.
“Well, when you look back at the game when I played in the 60s, ’70s,’ 80s, the jug was pretty much dominant, and now we’re like second -class citizens. Everything has been done for the hitter. As if you say the clock, the bases are bigger, you have an over glove that gives you an extra 3-7 inches sliding into the poster in front,” Jenkins said.

In addition to the changes in the rule that favors mothers, Jenkins said the torpedo bats are just the latest thing in baseball that will help them.
“There is more of a frame surface for the hitter, and I think it can increase the batting average a bit, but you get a better piece of wood on the ball, and the ball may want to travel a little longer,” he said.
“Who knows? A couple of extra basicits, and now a hitter is watching one of his teammates use it. Now he will use it. I can believe before all-star break every ball club will have half a dozen meetings using the torpedo bat.”

While the total frame surface is not increased with torpedo bats, the barrel is moved on bats to another place. The goal of changing the barrel is to move the thickest part of bats to where the player gets the most contact.
Jenkins said players using torpedo bats could see an increase in their numbers.
“I think the batting average maybe you can see another 20 points on each player’s batting average. Instead of hitting .255, .260, it could be .280,” Jenkins said.

While bats have taken baseball by storm this season, New York Yankes used Hitter Hitter Giancarlo Stanton a torpedo, including in the post -season when he mashed seven homes in 14 games.
Jenkins, who beat from 1965-1983, did not have to tackle any of the new rules in his days. He broke up for Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies in his 19-year-old career.
Jenkins won NL Cy Young from 1971 with Cubs and was named an all-star three times.
