MLB News: Mets’ Francisco Alvarez to miss 6-8 weeks due to broken hand

A severe injury occurred in the New York Met’s spring training, as starter Francisco Alvarez will not be with the team on opening day and then some.

Manager Carlos Mendoza revealed to journalists on Sunday that the 23-year-old Catcher will undergo an operation to repair a broken left Hamate Bone (hand) who will force him to miss six to eight weeks.

Alvarez, when the team’s top view in minors, is someone with high expectations entering the 2025 season, but it doesn’t start as he and the organization want.

“It’s always tough when one of your guys goes down like that,” Mendoza said of Alvarez. “But again, you have to go on. No one will seem sin on us. Everyone deals with injuries. We’ll get him back.”

Mendoza added the operation, which was required after damaging the Hamate bone under Live Bats on Saturday, will occur on Monday.

The Hamate bone is an interesting injury to baseball players because it can cause a dip in power at the record, something that Alvarez is gifted with. Mets wanted to see more than 11 homers from him in 2024 after mashing 25 in 2023, but he has proven that he can send it far when he loves it up.

Alvarez is also a very good defensive catcher that has a rocket to an arm and good framing skills. Obviously, the left hand that is his catching hand will be necessary to ensure that he can maintain high speeds that come in with each pitch.

Meanwhile, Mendoza and Mets have to lean on Alvarez’s backup, Luis Torrens, a veteran who considered a defense-leading man behind the bowl.

Torrens was with Mets in 2024 after being traded from Seattle Mariners to Queens. He hit .229/.292/.373 with a .665 ops with only three homers and 15 RBI over 47 games.

This is not the first big blow to Mets’ list before opening day, as the start of pitching has taken a hit.

Sean Manaea, whose Solid 2024 campaign led to a three-year agreement to sign with Mets, strained an oblique and will not be ready for the beginning of the regular season.

Frankie Montas, a free agent -Signee also expected to give good depth in the rotation, strained her right lat and is also out of six to eight weeks. This injury occurred on February 17th.

Finally, Nick Madrigal, utility man Mets brought in to give versatility to Mendoza’s lineups, miss the entire 2025 season after removing and breaking his left shoulder.

This is certainly not the injury news that Mets wanted to see, but they can certainly weather the storm after doing so in 2024. Their match in the second half led to a magical quay after the season and ran that ended up in the NLCs in the hands of the possible World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

But of course New York won the historic bidding war for Juan Soto’s services this season and bred him for a $ 765 million deal, which is an MLB record.

Soto was added to a lineup consisting of Star Shortstop Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, Mark Viiento and Pete Alonso, who eventually signed with New York.
