Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt was hit in the head by a bad ball during the seventh lap of the New York Mets-Minnesota Twins game on Wednesday.

Wendelstedt, 53, staffed the first base when Tyrone Taylor cut a line drive into a bad territory. He tried to get out of the way, but the ball hit him from the side of his head.

Wendelstedt went down immediately, and Mets ‘first base coach Antoan Richardson signaled feverishly against the twins’ dugout for medical care. The twins athletic teachers tended to him while lying on the ground.

Wendelstedt remained down for about a minute or two, and was then helped up at his feet and walked off the field with the help of the twin’s athletic trainer while a towel was held on his head.

After Wendelstedt left the field, the game resumed only three referees.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it happen,” said Mets’ advertiser Gary Cohen.

Taylor ended up grounded out to the third base when to-to be resumed.

Wendelstedt is the son of Harry Wendelstedt Jr., who had been unmpaired in 33 seasons, from 1966 to 1998.

Hunter Wendelstedt has been umpiring MLB games since 1998 and has been umpire in an All-Star Game (2011) and a World Series (2014).

Wednesdays’ games between Mets and Twins are the last in a three-game series. Mets won 5-1 on Monday, and the twins won 6-3 on Tuesday to create the rubber match.

At this point, the twins and mets are tied 3-3 at the bottom of the eighth lap.
