MLB Opening Day: Dodgers face protests from environmental activists

Opening day for Los Angeles Dodgers Will be met with protesters on Thursday afternoon after a group of environmental activists signed a petition to call a cessation of the team’s controversial partnership with an oil-and-gas company.

“A federal grand jury has accused Phillips 66, owner of the 76 gas station brand whose logo appears across Dodger Stadium, for allegedly having sent thousands of liters of water contaminated with oil and fat in La County’s sewerage system,” a press release from Climate Really Project’s Los Angeles Chapter Read.

“The company is accused of consciously and negligently violated the law of clean water.”

In a petition signed by more than 27,000 people, activists urged Walter to “immediately end” their sponsorship agreement with Phillips 66, which called the partnership “Green Wash of the Worst.”

The US Department of Justice Announced a six-count indictment in November, claiming that Phillips 66 had violated the law of clean water by dumping “hundreds of thousands of gallon industrial wastewater from its Carson Oil Refinery to the Los Angeles County Coastal System.” The company was also accused of not reporting these violations.

Controversial climate group facing bankruptcy, how did this come?

The prosecutors come from an incident on November 24, 2020. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Phillips 66 was allegedly discharged an estimated 310,000 gallon “non-compatible industrial wastewater” in the sewer system during a 2.5-hour window.

It is assumed that the wastewater contained approx. 64,000 pounds of oil and fat.

In a separate event on February 8, 2021, it was assumed that another 480,000 gallon had been discharged in the sewer system.

Earlier this month, California’s State Senate’s majority leader Lena Gonzalez also called on Dodgers to end their partnership with Phillips 66.

“To finish the sponsorship with Phillips 66 would send the message that it is time to end our embrace of contaminating fossil fuels and working together against a cleaner, greener future,” reads Gonzalez’s letter to Walter.

Dodgers open the season Thursday at home toward Detroit Tigers.
