Monster Hunter Wilds Best Controller Settings
After spending hours playing beta and the main game for review, here are my recommendations for the best controller -settings to change in Monster Hunter Wilds. Then I go closer to each one so you can decide which settings you want to run with.
- Focus mode – Shift
- Seikret Manual Controls – Type 2
- Back Paddle -Setup (Basic) – Prioritize Avoid and Attack on melee
- Settings for short zoom – Disable
- Monster Sighting Camera – Disable
- KEEP AFFEEE DAVAGE – Short
Focus mode (shift)
First up there are the controller settings related to focus mode. These relate to the new targeting system, which is by default on the left trigger. Generally, keep the trigger down to get into focus mode, but there is an opportunity to set it to a button button. This can really help with some weapons like the insect Glaive, where you have to keep several buttons down at once. Similarly, for weapons like the long sword, where you generally always want to be in focus, this can save you from having to keep the trigger down in most of a match.
Seikret manual controls
Next up is Seikret Manual Controls. This setting relates to how your sequet is moving when it is not in Auto-Move mode. I find that it is much more intuitive to have this work in type 2, which is the same as your hunter moving. By default, keep R1/RB to speed up and R2/RT to slow down. If this feels weird to you as it does to me, switch to the other option.
Back paddles
While we are on the topic with the best controller settings, it is worth mentioning some Back Paddle bonds that help them with multiple Premium Controllers like DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite Series 2:
- Avoid – Having the Evade button (A on Xbox, X on PlayStation) on a backpad can really help as you can move the right stick while you avoid so you can quickly focus your goal again
- Attack 1 – The first of your most important attacks (for non-bow-gun users) is likely to be on Y for Xbox and Triangle to PS5. You want this on a back padle so you can aim while attacking, without having to take your thumbs off the right stick
- Attack 2 – The second of your most important attacks can also be mapped into a back padle for easier use. As a long sword head I think this setup really helps me to focus my goal while I use focus mode
- Sheathe weapons – Sometimes you want to howl your weapon to switch to deed or trigger environmental effects with the hook shot.
- Sprint – Another option for a Back Paddle mapping button is sprint. This is on the left stick click by default.

Kortzoom Settings
Monster Hunter Wilds Has an extremely detailed map that reveals different points of interest depending on how zoomed in you is. The problem that I ran into was that I use adjustable trigger action on my DualSense Edge, so there is less of a press to activate them. This means that trying to zoom in would automatically make the card jump to the highest zoom or the lowest zoom, making it very difficult to hone what I am actually trying to see. Disabling this really helps, especially when combing the card for resources.
Monster Sighting Camera
Finally, we have Monster Sighting Camera, who will zoom in and present a more cinematic shot of big monsters when we first meet them. I prefer to turn this off as it can cause you to lose control of the camera while driving in battle. More than once, this has led to the fact that I have lost the element of surprise on a monster at the beginning of a hunt due to my character continuing to move while the monster -viewed camera is active. Disable this to avoid this animation triggering.
