NA Secretariat seeks details on Omar Ayub

ISLAMABAD:

The National Assembly secretariat on Monday wrote a fourth formal letter to the opposition chief whip, Amir Dogar, to get a written response detailing pending legal proceedings against former opposition leader Omar Ayub, as the process of appointing a new leader of the opposition is still unresolved.

The move comes on the back of a longer vacancy in the post following Omar Ayub’s disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan. NA chairman Ayaz Sadiq has maintained that the issue of appointing a new opposition leader is “sub judice”.

According to a statement issued by the NA Secretariat spokesperson, previous letters on the same matter were sent on November 19, December 5 and December 19, 2025.

“However, so far no response has been received from the National Assembly’s secretariat,” it read.

The statement emphasized that the requested information was a constitutional necessity.

“The allocation of this information is essential to meet the constitutional requirements for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition.”

It further noted that the NA Secretariat itself had been named as a party to certain pending legal proceedings.

“The [National Assembly] The Secretariat has been made a party to certain subordinate cases involving the former Leader of the Opposition, making it necessary to obtain the current status of the cases,” the statement said.

The secretariat said the opposition chief whip had again been asked to submit the relevant details.

“In the letter, the Chief Whip of the Opposition has been asked to provide the necessary information on the current status of the pending legal proceedings against Omar Ayub so that the process for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition can be completed.”
