Karachi:
The six water channels constructed by the river Indus will not only destroy Sindh’s agriculture, but will also parch urban areas, including Karachi.
In the Sindh Unity conference organized by Jay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) at the Karachi Press Club on Thursday, the speakers demanded the government to give Sindh’s rightful share of the water. “It’s not just for our agriculture, but we don’t have water to drink,” said JSMS Riaz Chandio.
“People in urban areas believe that the construction of six channels on the river is a pure problem related to rural areas,” he explained. But, he added, people who live Sindh’s urban areas, especially in Hyderabad and Karachi, will face the consequences more than those living in long thrown areas. He appealed Karachiites to take collective actions against the project.
Rejection of the six channels he strongly demanded the government that Sindh may receive its proper proportion of water in accordance with the water decision in 1991.
Participants urged the United Nations to recognize the Indus River as a living entity, similar to the Magpie River in Canada and other protected rivers around the world.
In the decision adopted by the participants of the conference, they condemned the retaliation measures from the PPP-led government and demanded immediate release of Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi.
The conference participated by Dr. Safdar Abbasi, Sardar Abdul Rahim, Husnain Mirza, Noor-Ul-Huda Shah, Dr. Kaiser Bengali, Syed Khuda Dino Shah, Manzoor Mirani, Shahab Osto, Dr. Ali Hassan Bhutto, Aamir Fayaz Warraich, Naeem Qureshi Advocate and others.
The conference was also responsible for the provincial and federal governments of rising road accidents. They also condemned the recent accidents in the city and demanded a crash on dumping mafia.
Participants also discussed the prevailing law and order situation in SUKKUR and Larkana divisions that affected hundreds of people.
