NBA News: Mavericks GM Nico Harrison has ‘no regret’ over Luka Doncic -handel

Dallas Maverick’s GM Nico Harrison still weatheres the storm caused by fans’ setback over the Luka Doncic trade to Los Angeles Lakers.

This trade has not looked good for Mavericks since it went down into the late hours of February 1st, when they hardly hung on a play-in tournament seed ( # 10), where they face Sacramento Kings Wednesday after completing 39-43 in the regular season.

But despite the outrage from the fan base as well as the 13-20 record since trading in Doncic, Harrison said “no regret” to make the deal with Lakers.

Harrison spoke with media members on Tuesday with Maverick’s CEO Rick Welts, where only Dallas-based journalists were present to ask questions.

“There is no regret about the trade,” Harrison said via Espns Tim Macmahon. “Part of my job is to do the best for mavericks, not only today, but also in the future, and some of the decisions I need to make will be unpopular.

“It’s my job and I have to stand by it.”

Harrison also continued his attitude that “Defense wins championships”, which is what he said when he acquired the All-Star Center Anthony Davis, the highlight of Lakers’ package for Doncic.

“But our philosophy, as I said, is the defense that wins championships and we are built on defense,” Harrison explained via ESPN. “And this trade cements us for that.”

However, Davis has only played nine games in a Maverick’s uniform since he was traded when he suffered a left abducting injury during his team debut. Kyrie Irving, the dynamic Point Guard, who worked with Doncic well on its way to the NBA final last season, suffered a torn ACL after the trade and created a massive loss at the start of five.

The Doncic Agreement literally surprised the whole basketball world, but Harrison was very secret in dealing with Lakers because he said, “You can’t shop your best player.”

“It’s not responsible because a trade may not work,” Harrison said per. Athletic. “And then they will eventually have to play under control of being traded.”

The deal was not something fans would see, and they have let it be known by having a “funeral” with a coffin and everyone outside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the home of Mavericks, while there have been consistently “four Nico” Chants at Home Games with the team fighting.

It came to its highest when Doncic returned to Dallas in a Lakers uniform on April 10, and he continued to drop 45 points in the 112-97 victory for his new team.

Macmahon reports that the team “is expected to lose dozens of millions” this season alone as Mavs fans refuse to show up for games while the sale of goods is down and even sponsors are split from the organization.

“Well, the beauty of Dallas is that it is a passionate fanbase,” Harrison added. “In order for us to reach goals, we need that fanbase.

“And to be honest with you, every trade I’ve ever made since I’ve been here has not been considered a good deal, and then sometimes it takes time. When I traded for Kyrie, it was met with a lot of skepticism and it was classified as a terrible trade and you didn’t see it right away, but eventually everyone agreed that it was a big deal.”

Harrison hopes that time is more gracious with Mavericks with this deal, one that sent the franchise’s face out west.

Lakers have gone 22-13 since the Doncic trade.
