NDMA accused of failing flood victims

Hyderabad:

The management of Awami Tehreek has strongly condemned the federal and provincial governments of their lack of protection of citizens in the recent heavy rain in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltist, where over 300 people have lost their lives.

In a joint statement is Awami Tehreek’s central presidential lawyer Rasool Bux Palijo, Central Secretary General Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Vice President Sattar Rind, Senior leaders Attorney Ismail Khaskheli, Mir Basheer Talpur and Noor Nabi Palijo expressed grief and indignation of life’s loss of life. They held the government responsible for the great human tragedy and accused it of not providing timely rescue operations and accurate information to the public.

The leaders claimed that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has “swallowed trillion of rupees in the name of natural disasters” but did little to save or rehabilitate the victims. “NDMA has limited itself to just counting the dead instead of providing real help,” the statement says.

They also warned that Sindh is also expected to meet heavy rain, yet neither the Sindh government nor the provincial or national disaster control authorities (PDMA/NDMA) have made sufficient preparations. “If governments had prioritized saving lives in terms of making money out of disasters, people would have been spared such enormous human and economic losses,” leaders said.
