Netflix has bought Richard Linklater’s movie Nouvelle VageWith Deadline reporting that the deal is closed for $ 4 million, “a record statotplay for a French -language film.”
The film boasts an impressive 85% rotten tomatoes score, which means it’s worth a place on our best Netflix movie, even though the decision to stream it has been met with criticism.
Linklater’s film follows the recording of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. It is Linklater’s first non-English language movie and stars a lot of newcomers in accordance with the spirit of the French new wave. It also received a lot of praise at the Cannes Film Festival.

Netflix’s Linklater -Agreement has been met with criticism
While the best streaming services continue to thrive because of their “on -demand” nature some people have criticized the fact Nouvelle Vage Doesn’t seem to get a cinema release.
In response to the news, an X user noticed that “a movie that celebrates the essence of cinema will not be shown in cinemas,” an argument that seems to be shared among many movie lovers.
So a movie that celebrates the essence of cinema will not be shown in cinemas. 😔May 27, 2025
Another person argued that: “A love letter to cinema stuck to a streaming -App? Godard would roll in his grave.”

I also have my concerns about Netflix’s decision. I’m worried Nouvelle Vage will end up buried among a seemingly endless library, while the streaming giant promotes other titles instead. It would be a shame for a movie like this to be forgotten.
Perhaps a straight-to-streaming option was not the best step to this, as there is a risk that Netflix simply will not market it properly and it will not get a long theater race.
Based on the film’s success, there is a chance that it can be in the next Oscar race and it is not unheard of for a Netflix movie to win big. Emilia Perez Took plenty of prices home despite its controversial handling of his subject.
With regard to a potential theater release window to Nouvelle VageDeadline said: “Breathless regarded as a cinema classic and Nouvelle Vage A love letter to cinema. Could there be longer theater games either in the US or abroad before it hits Netflix? At least domestic we hear that it will probably just be the usual pricing-qualifying two-week window. “
I definitely want to see Nouvelle Vage Get some time in theaters, but I’m worried that it won’t be there as long as it deserves to be.
