There are many universal traditions associated with graduation ceremonies, from paying too much to hiring a dress to posing for a photo that will be proud of space in your parents’ house until the zombie apocalypse – and even then it will still be there, just with added cobwebs and a splatter of green blood.
There is also a whole legend that surrounds tassels on Mortarboard. Traditionally, tassels are carried on the right side and moved left during a special part of the ceremony for graduates in high school. For university graduates, bachelors carry tassels on the right side until their degrees are assigned, and then move to the left.
Goodness knows what can happen to you if you move your tassel from left to right – maybe you will be loaded with a lifetime of debt or something terrible like that. Erm, hang in a second …

What is new threads?
Strands is Nyt’s non-new-new-more word games after Wordle and connections. It is now a fully expanded member of Nyt’s Games Stable, which has been running for a year and can be played on the new Games website on desktop or mobile.
