NEW Connections today (game #895) – the answers
The answers to today’s Connections, game #895, are…
- YELLOW: A LITTLE DAB, DROP, SPLASH, TOUCH
- GREEN: SEIMAN SALT DOG, SKIPPER, SWAB, TAR
- BLUE: TROPICAL FRUITS/VEGETABLES BITTER MELON, CHAYOTE, DURIAN, SOURSOP
- PURPLE: ____ OFFER BIG, PLEA, RAW, SWEETHEART
- My assessment: Hard
- My score: 2 errors
I wasted two mistakes trying to gather the group that got LITTLE. My first idea was that it was about applying a small amount of something – so I had SWAB instead of TOUCH, then I swapped it for TAR before I finally saw sense.
SALTY DOG was the tile that unlocked the green group. I’ve always liked that expression: Quint (Robert Shaw) i Jaws be the epitome of one. A salty dog is the kind of person who is gnarled and bearded, half man, half woolly and in desperate need of a bath, but whose nautical knowledge is their superpower.
I got the blue group because of DURIAN, which is the kind of fruit you eat like a trip (hence its nickname – vomit fruit), but I regret not seeing today’s very lowly purple group. Kudos if you did.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different degree of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough, and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the last one, as you’ll be able to answer it by a process of elimination. Also, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.
It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to let you play tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that can hide the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
