NEW Connections today (game #871) – the answers
The answers to today’s Connections, game #871, are…
- YELLOW: FORTITUDE BACKGROUND, COURAGE, HEART, SPIRIT
- GREEN: CHANNEL MEDIUM, OUTLET, PLATFORM, PLATFORM
- BLUE: WORDS THAT BEGIN WITH THE “SAY” SOUND SACRUM, SEITAN, SEYCHELLES, SÉANCE
- PURPLE: THINGS WITH LETTERS A TO Z ABECEDARIUM, COMPUTER KEYBOARD, OUIJA BOARD, SCRABBLE
- My assessment: Hard
- My score: 1 error
Before I got the yellow/easiest group and kicked myself for not seeing it sooner, I made a mistake I hope I wasn’t alone in – linking SÉANCE, SPIRIT, OUIJA BOARD and MEDIUM, thinking it was a group about contacting the dead.
Fortunately, triumph followed when I got the purple/hardest quartet next after thinking that letters connected SCRABBLE and COMPUTER KEYBOARD.
I didn’t know what an ABECEDARIUM was (an inscription consisting of the letters of an alphabet, almost always listed in order), but it sounded right, and I knew from its appearances in horror movies and ghost stories that an OUIJA TABLE consisted of letters and the words YES and NO.
The blue group was a reminder that you often have to say the words on the tiles as well as read them.
Yesterday’s NYT Connections Answers (Tuesday, October 28, Game #870)

- GREEN: YOU KNOW ENLIGHTENMENT, HIP, CLIMATE, WISE
- BLUE: REMOTE CONTROL BUTTONS BACK, HOME, MENU, SELECT
- PURPLE: ONE NAMED SINGER PLUS INITIAL LETTER GUSHER, KENYA, OCHER, THE brook
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different degree of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough, and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the last one, as you’ll be able to answer it by a process of elimination. Also, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.
It’s a bit more involved than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to let you beat yourself up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that can hide the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
