New -Connections Today (Play #653) – The answers
The answers to today’s connections, game #653, are …
- Yellow: Black and white stuff Crossword, Oreo, Panda, Tuxedo
- Green: Anagrams Abel, Able, Bale, Bela
- Blue: US presidential names Monkey, cal, dick, teddy
- Purple: Ready as ___ A bell, crystal, day, mud
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 1 Error
Today’s puzzle was clear when ___ mud to begin with, and I wasted foolish time thinking that a group consisted of famous actors Crystal (Billy), Bale (Christian) and stretches the boundaries of logic, Day (Daniel Day-Lewis) and is Dick (van Dyke).
Next, I thought that a bell was an abbreviation of Alexander Graham Bell, the phone inventor.
And then it became as clear as crystal.
I wasn’t sure if Oreo qualified, but I was convinced that crosswords, panda and tuxedo are black and white things.
The unexpected joy of snagging a purple square followed before I finally clocked that Abel, Able, Bale and Bela contained the same four letters and were anagrams of each other.
All a blessing as I would never have got US presidential names of a month of super Tuesdays.
How did you do today? Tell me that in the comments below.
Yesterday’s new -connections Reply (Monday 24 March, Game #652)

What are new connections?
New Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four objects that share something in common, and each group has another level of difficulty: green is light, yellow a little harder, blue often quite hard and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you do not have to technically solve the last one, as you can answer one by an elimination process. In addition, you can make up to four errors, giving you a little bit of breathing room.
However, it is a little more involved than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to get up with tricks. For example, be careful on gay and other word games that can hide the answers.
It can be played free of charge via the new Games website on desktop or mobile.
