- CD Project Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has been displayed on Nintendo Switch 2
- Comparisons between it and other consoles such as the steam deck and PS5 are made
- DLSS seems to be at the forefront of the handheld performance and visual abilities
The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here and it comes with a handful of titles ready for players to dive down from day one. Fortunately, we now have an early look at one especially from game developer CD project Red.
In a YouTube video by Nintendo Life, CD Project Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 revealed, running on Nintendo Switch 2, with visual quality competing with other PC handhelds as the steam deck. This is thanks to NVIDIA’s custom T239 chip that allows the new handheld to take advantage of DLSS SPAPERS, for better than native performance, while it is upscale from a lower internal resolution.
Given past expectations based on the hardware rumors (which turned out to be legitimate), Cyberpunk 2077 has impressed many players with its lighting and environmental details. However, it is worth noting that NVIDIA’s DLSS upscaling is being used to be used quite aggressively, which is clear to see in some of the blurred sequences in the gameplay exhibition window.
This can be expected as Switch 2 already pushes over its weight in running a game like Cyberpunk 2077. But there are still very clear performance dips, especially during the vehicle’s review that highlights the potential problem – if DLSS is actually used aggressively, and the performance is not on the level of looking dip in what looks like the top end of 20FPS, is it really impressive after all?
It is worth noting that it is not precisely clear which segments of the gameplay below are either rooted or handheld (it is probably the former considering the 4K video quality) and there will be a choice between quality and performance conditions.
This is also still one in time, Cyberpunk 2077 -Then with other upcoming handhelds as the newly announced MSI Claw A8 using AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
Analysis: It is better than expected but does not wander Switch 2’s costs
Now, before you say I have a Nintendo Switch 2 agenda I think games like Cyberpunk 2077 Have the potential to further exceed their performance and visual expectations on the device. Despite that, the handheld $ 449.99 / £ 395.99 / AU $ 699.95 Price has me to ask a basic question – wouldn’t it be better to buy a PS5, Xbox Series X at about the same price, for a better experience?
I could go into the handheld PC comparisons and Claw 8 AI+’s processing power, but I would hate to sound like a broken record. Spoiler alarm; It is alleged to be the better and more powerful unit.
However, the simple fact here is that Switch 2’s Cyberpunk 2077 Is not in the same ballpark visually and performance as one of Sony’s or Microsoft consoles. In that sense, Switch 2’s value as a game console -rival is lost if it costs almost the same and yet gives a worse experience.
Before you point out that the MSI Claw 8 AI+ costs more than the PS5 and Xbox series X, it is not in the game console category (it also does not come with a dock for extra performance) and its price compared to Switch 2 is still justified considering the power packed in such a compact device. If Switch 2’s price was much lower I would be far more impressed with Cyberpunk 2077‘s performance, but duty or not, that is not the case.
DLSS seems to be the factor that will make the heavy lift with Switch 2 and I would argue that is one reason why its version of Cyberpunk 2077 Can be compared to other handhelds using either Xess or FSR (none of whom are on par with NVIDIA’s DLSS). Even then, without tools like frame generation, it still doesn’t leave me impressed with Switch 2, but fortunately I eat my words if I’m proven wrong with its abilities.
