Looking for a different day?
A new NEW Strands puzzle appears at midnight every day for your time zone – meaning some people always play ‘today’s game’ while others play ‘yesterday’s’. If you’re looking for the Tuesday puzzle instead then click here: NEW Strand’s Hints and Answers for Tuesday, October 21 (Game #597).
Strands is the NYT’s latest word game, following the likes of Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections – and it’s great fun. It can be difficult though, so read on for my Strands tips.
Want more word-based fun? So check out my NYT Connections today and Quordle Today pages for tips and answers to these games, and Marc’s Wordle Today page for the original viral word game.

NEW Strands today (game #598) – the answers
The answers to today’s Strands, game #598, are…
- BATTERY
- COIN
- PENCIL
- LACE
- THUMB TACK
- TAPE
- SPANGRAM: JUNK DRAWER
- My assessment: Hard
- My score: Perfect
As I slowly found all these words, I kept wondering: what is the connection between all these random things. It wasn’t until I finally got the spanframe that I realized the random stuff was the connection.
Every home has a JUNKDRAWER, although I think ours contains several – one dedicated solely to cables that may or may not belong to devices that were dumped years ago but the cables kept.
The others contain items similar to those in today’s search, roughly categorized as “might come in handy one day”, even though we all know they never will, and if the day comes when you need a radiator wrench, SHOES, or PENCIL, you won’t be able to find it in the JUNKDRAWER and will go out and buy a new one instead.
A very difficult game to discover the theme for, but not too difficult in terms of search and completion. All in all, a lot like finding exactly what you were looking for in JUNKDRAWER – oddly satisfying.
Yesterday’s NYT Strand’s Answer (Tuesday, October 21, Game #597)
- OPENS
- STAGE
- ENCORE
- HEADING
- GOODS
- SPANGRAM: LIVE CONCERT
