New underpass promises signal -free journey

The long-awaited GPO Chowk division on Mall Road, RawalPindi, is scheduled to open for traffic on June 30 (tomorrow). Completed in a record four months, the RS4.6 billion project aims to make the 26-kilometer Mall Road signal-free and improves traffic flow significantly over the city.

The downfall spanning 1.93 kilometers was considered important to relieve chronic traffic congestion, especially during VIP movements. The infrastructure includes 2,025 piles, 50 beams and a fully constructed bridge along with 20 feet wide service paths and pedestrian paths on both sides.

The project is described as an advanced initiative and represents a major urban upgrade. When operational, it will ensure signal -free journey from Saddar to Kaceri and improve overall traffic efficiency.

While the main construction is completed, finishing, including painting and installing computer -digital advertising boards.

As part of the wider beautification plan, landscape architecture will have decorative grass, flowers and over 20,000 trees, including fruit-bearing and shade-delivery varieties to be planted during the upcoming Monsoon Plantation campaign.

The downfall is also monitored through CCTV monitoring to ensure public security. Rawal Pindi -Vice Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema described the project as a model for modern urban planning, emphasizing that its lighting, landscape architecture and commercial influence will set a new standard.
