- There is a new update for Windows 11 24h2 in Preview
- It offers a whole load with features, although some are copilot+ pc -exclusives
- New abilities include a supercharged search in settings, cross-association’s resume with OneDrive files, useful new HDR settings and more more
Windows 11 Version 24H2 is set to receive a rough pile of new features soon and they are already in an optional patch for those who want to test the water early.
The example update for May (picked up by Neowin) will be the full June -Patch next month, and it comes with some changes to Copilot+ PCS as well as lots of goodies for those with a traditional Windows 11 -PC.
We start with the latter as most people still have a standard Windows 11 device, and an interesting addition to everyone with update KB5058499 is a new CR device’s resume feature.
As Microsoft explains, you can now resume work with an OneDrive file on your PC if you previously played with it on your smartphone (Android or iOS). Windows 11 will ask you with a review to check if you want to resume work with a file you just used on your phone within the last five minutes, which is a nice touch.
There are also improvements for those with an HDR screen with new settings in settings, including a better explanation of what enables ‘Use HDR’ means, and a tilted to turn on Dolby Vision (or turn it off) independently of HDR. Windows 11 will also now stream HDR video in all its glory, even if you’ve turned off HDR (to us environment, games and so on).
New stock settings (as previously seen in the test) now emerge when you pull a file out of a folder (in File Explorer), with suggested apps displayed in a tray at the top of the screen so you can drop the file there to easily share it directly to any of these applications.
When writing with voice access, you can now turn off the gang filter, and in the setting app there is a FAQ that tells you more about your PC and what it really means. (Puts a perspective on how well your graphics card is or how the amount of system RAM has can affect the performance of Windows 11).
It is also worth noting that Microsoft has reinstated the ability to open copilot with Windows Key + C Shortcut as an alternative to those who do not have a dedicated copilot button. If you have the shortcut (or copilot button), invoke ‘Press to talk’ with the AI Assistant where you can use voice commands (if you have a microphone).
Copilot+ PC exclusives
In case of Copilot+ PCS, the optional update of May goes to the city with fresh features to click on doing, the companion feature introduced with recall that provides context-sensitive AI-related actions.
It includes a new ash copilot option in the click menu to make
In addition, the intelligent text actions that were previously only available with Snapdragon (arm) are copilot+ PCS, now on devices with AMD or Intel processors. This gives you options within clicks to make to quickly summarize or rewrite text (or transform it into a list), all obtained using AI forces built into Windows 11. (Specifically, this is ‘Phi Silica’ small language model, which means the work is performed right on the device, not in the cloud).
Microsoft has also done so so that with a stylus they can have the shortcut button on the pen OPEN CLICK to do (with either a single or double -click), and it is now possible to make the feature one of the four specified apps in the PEN menu.
Furthermore, clicks to make now made available in the European economic area with all these fresh features of tow.
Finally, there is a big feature with Copilot+ PCS in the introduction of a SuperCharged Search that utilizes AI for the Settings app. You can write a natural language request in the Windows 11 search field on the taskbar to find the setting you want, such as ‘Change my Desktop wallpaper’ which will get the relevant part of the setting app.
Also with the narrator, the screen reading tool built into Windows 11, AI now produces descriptions for images on web pages (or other content) where the alternative (all) text is not delivered.
Analysis: A gradual roll -out of nifty powers
Remember, this is an optional update as mentioned, so if you grab this now, you may encounter bugs. Given that the generally perceived wisdom is that most users will feel better to wait until the preview update will be a full release which will happen next month (June 10 to be precise).
If you can’t wait to test some of these features, jump on this upgrade in every way – you’ll find it by checking Windows Update as usual. However, remember that these features are all labeled as having a gradual rollout, so it may take some time for some of this functionality to filter through to your PC. In this case, it’s another reason to be patient and wait until June.
There are definitely some smart forces here, and the changes to HDR, Hardware-Eofts asked questions in settings and extra file sharing options are all welcome. The supercharged search is a clear highlight, but it is only for Copilot+ PCS, so most people do not get it.
Another remarkable feature is Cross Device CV that looks smartly implemented and this is a space to see because Microsoft is set to expand this ability in the future. We should see that this will be a much wider job, which allows all apps to be resumed in this way across your phone and PC in the end, not just OneDrive files.
In short, this should be Microsoft’s equivalent to Apple’s Handoff function, or at least it is the theory based on heavy -weight clues that the company recently dropped (and quickly withdrawn).
