San Francisco 49ers traded a first round in 2021 and two future first round and third round elections for Miami Dolphins to select Quarterback Trey Lance # 3 in the draft that year.
The team apparently thought Lance was quarterback in their future. He was a prominent quarterback in North Dakota State and threw in 2,786 yards and 28 touchdown passes while rushing to 1,100 meters in his lonely full season with Bison in 2019.

The label with “franchise -quarterback” could never be used for lance in his time with the 49s or in the NFL for that matter.
The once -in -demand quarterback hit free agency during the high season after a stint with Dallas Cowboys. On Wednesday, TSN reported the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders added Lance to their negotiating list. The CFL team has exclusive rights if Lance decides to play north of the border.
Lance started his rookie season as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo and was only able to start two matches. He was named Start Quarterback in 2022, but an injury to week 2 cost him the season. When he was at full health, Brock Purdy had taken control of the starting job.

He had a chance to revive his NFL career with cowboys, but rarely came to the field as he was stuck behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush on the depth card.
Dallas released Lance in high season.
However, all hope is not lost. Lance is back on the field and is working to try to get back to the NFL. Playing in CFL is far from a death Knell in a player’s career.
Lance’s father, Carlton, played in CFL with Roughriders. Quarterbacks as late as Jeff Garcia and Doug Flutie have played in CFL. The Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon also played in the league.

It’s unclear what Lance will do now. 24-year-old’s career is far from over.
