NFL Draft: Broncos’ Sean Payton Questions Warning for Shedur Sanders

Denver Bronco’s head coach Sean Payton never needed a quarterback that came into the 2025 NFL draft, which is always a good place to be in.

Bo Nix, the team’s election in the first round of 2024, showed tremendous promise as a rookie, which helped lead Denver into the playoffs out of a tough AFC West Division.

But that did not mean that Payton did not evaluate the available quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, especially Shedeur Sanders, who played down the road in Boulder for Colorado Buffaloes for the past two seasons.

Sanders took over the NFL Draft history lines as he slipped into the fifth round before Cleveland Browns eventually took him No. 144 selection. Due to the unexpected fall down the draft of the board of directors, Payton issued a warning to the NFL team about the view he had come to know really well.

“I saw [Shedeur] When he was in the junior height and then I saw him in high school and then I saw him when he was someone else in high school when they were on their way to Florida, “Payton said via Espn.”

Payton was among the many coaches who participated in Colorado’s Pro Day, or as Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders called it, “We’re not hard to find showcase.”

Payton came very impressed with what Sanders had put out on the field of practice.

“We sat there. I looked right behind him and threw … he had an excellent pro day,” he explained. “I think we are all surprised, and yet the talent – Holy Cow if you are a team that needs a quarterback.”

Now Payton and Older Sanders have a strong relationship, which was displayed on the latter Instagram when he sent a photo of them two on the pro day smiling together.

But Payton was not just surprised because he knows the Sanders family well. Many others couldn’t believe he had slipped so far, to the point where Brown’s GM Andrew Berry admitted they had taken him because he had been the best prospect of “the most important position.”

“That’s surprising. We assessed him,” said New England Patriot’s Executive Vice President of Player Personal Eliot Wolf after Day 2 via ESPN. “I had the opportunity to watch him play against Oklahoma State this year … It was interesting to see that he is still available and I’m sure there will be a fit for him tomorrow.”

Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner who knows Deion Sanders very well, considering his time with the organization, added: “I saw two or three ballgames with [Shedeur]. So with my knowledge I know where the character is there and boy, it’s a big character. It is an incredibly competitive winning character for sports. OK? And then I can tell you. “

Shedeur Sanders admitted that this “was not the plan”, especially considering the first round that many had given him. And while there will probably not be anyone who gives an accurate answer as to why he slid down the draft, the reports have come out of the fact that he had bad meetings in the pre -throwing process with multiple teams, and maybe they were a factor.

Either way, Sanders celebrated in his Texas home when Browns finally took his name out of the draft of the pool. He is ready to go to work in a crowded quarterbacks room that includes colleague NFL Drafte Dillon Gabriel, whom Cleveland took in the third round over Sanders, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Deshaun Watson, although his status of 2025 is up in the air due to injury.

“The time we spent with shedur and what he has done throughout his college career is impressive,” Berry said. “He’s an impressive young man. He’s a really good quarterback.”
