NFL players who are not interested in expanding the regular season to 18 games, says NFLPA Exec

While NFL management It can be excited about the opportunity to expand the regular season, the players do not seem to have the same enthusiasm.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has talked openly about his interest in expanding the regular season to 18 games. Talking on one Pre-Super Bowl News Conference Monday, he noticed that more work should be done before making the decision, but expressed the desire to give fans what they want.

“We know fans love football and they want more football. But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we handle it,” Goodell said.

And while fans’ interests are among the highest priorities, NFLPA’s CEO Lloyd Howell argued on Tuesday that the player’s interest is definitely the top – and players do not appear to be interested.

“Their page has not raised it, we certainly have not raised it. … any comment outside of a formal negotiation is just comments,” Howell said.

“It’s a player’s decision on what they will agree to do or not. Right now, when I’ve talked to players in the past two seasons, no one will play a 18th game. No. Seventeen matches are already too many of the guys, too long.

Howell continued to claim that health and security concerns as well as recovery time represent the greatest obstacle in Expansion of the regular season More than it already has.

“Whatever Roger says, you open the CBA (collective negotiation agreement) and we’re going to get into field surfaces, we’ll get to safety, we’re going to get into a lot of things,” he said.

Revenue will also be another hot topic. According to the current CBA, the players’ share of the league revenue increased from 47% to 48% starting in 2021. It was increased to 48.5% based on the league’s new TV contracts after the 17-game was implemented.

But this figure is expected to change if the regular season is expanded, Howell said.

“If I ask my workforce to work more, it’s not as simple as I fall back on the division of revenue already,” he said. “There are so many dimensions hanging out of the length of the season.”
