Nikon has finally revealed Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.2 s, a professional moderately wide angular-prime lens and long-term resident of the Z-Mount Lens Road Map. It joins two other f/1.2 primates as the widest of the three, designed for storytelling, where the others are z 50mm f/1.2 s and z 85mm f/1.2 s prime.
I am a big fan of 35 mm focal length, after using it almost exclusively for about three years in East Africa. It is a versatile focal length to include the environment in your images as part of the story. Of course this pro optics have taken my attention – it’s a dream lens in almost Any road. What is less dreamy and more sweaty is its requesting price, plus its size and weight-this is a large lens in all these respects.
Your for a staggering $ 2,799 / £ 2,899 / AU $ 4,899, Z 35mm f / 1.2 weighs a mighty 2 kg 5.4 oz / 1,060 g too, so it’s not walk-around lens I would hope it could be. What it seems, though, is an optically flawless prime, with particularly complex optical construction, 11-blade aperture for dreamy, smooth and round bokeh, plus it is a sturdy bit of gear built to withstand hard terrain.
Make no mistake, this is a proper lens that will dry the floor optically with Nikon’s recent Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 and will rank as one of the best Nikon Z lenses.
Great in every way
Nikon now has three 35 mm Z-Mount Prime lenses for his mirror-free cameras. The first was Z 35mm f/1.8, the second the affordable Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4, which costs only $ 599/£ 649/AU $ 1,099, and now the professional Z 35mm f/1.2 S. Part of a Trinity of Pro f/ 1.2 Primes, the last 35 mm lens must be more than just its bright f/ 1.2 aperture -frankly, there is not enough of a difference based on aperture alone to distribute almost 5x the money.
My Nikon Z 35mm F/1.4 Review says it’s not Nikon’s best, but I expect the new 35mm f/1.2 s to be a completely different artist, with a gap in quality. Those who are willing to drag the F/1.2 lens around will be rewarded with what appears to be flawless optics; Its 11-bladed aperture will provide bokeh quality at the next level, while its optical construction of 17 elements in 15 groups will ensure pin sharp details throughout your shot, free of distortions. It is a staggering complex lens construction for a primary lens.
Its minimal focus distance is 0.99 ft / 0.3 m, enabling a maximum 0.2x enlargement-it is close enough for everyday details without being a close up.
In size, Z 35mm F/1.2 S will appropriately fit best with Nikon’s best professional cameras nikon Z8 and Nikon Z9, but will feel like a size discrepancy with the smaller Nikon Z6 III. This is a pro -lens through and through and if money is not a object, Z 35mm f/1.2 S looks like a real winner.
