- Nikon -The rumors say that Mirrorless Nikon Zr is coming later in 2025
- Nikon acquired red in April 2024
- Since the acquisition, Red has released Z-Mount versions of two of his cameras
Nikon could work on a video-oriented mirror-free camera that incorporates technology from red-in the least, according to a new rumor.
Nikon rumors released a story that claimed that the next camera being released by Nikon will be a Z-Mount model busting with cinema-located red features and tech. The story suggests that it could even be called Nikon Zr or Nikon Zr – ‘R’ in the name possibly a nod to the red tech on board.
Other claims in the story are that the camera will have a ‘brick-shaped’ design without a penta prism or electronic viewfinder, and will look like a cross between Sony FX3, Nikon Z30 and the blocked appearance of existing red cameras such as Komodo or V-Raptor.
It is also stated that the camera will have the same sensor as the excellent Nikon Z6 III (a 24.5MP partially stacked sensor with full frame, then) and a ‘very large’ LCD screen. Most mirror-free cameras have 3-inch screens, so we think this suggests that a 4-inch or even 5-inch screen is in offing.
Nikon is now stuck in the red
Red, originally founded in the US in 2007 as Red Digital Cinema, was acquired by Nikon in April 2024 for $ 85 million. Since then, it has released versions of Komodo and V-Raptor with Nikon Z-Mount, but it is expected long that closer cooperation would come out of the partnership.
In the wake of the red purchase, Nikon -President Muneaki Tokunari told Nippon.com, “Nikon Corp. aims to expand its market share for cameras by using the video technologies from an American film camera company acquired in the spring.” The rumored Nikon ZR could be the first brand new camera to come with these technologies.
Nikon Rumors believes the camera will officially be announced later in 2025, probably in the third or fourth quarter. We keep our eyes peeled for more hints at what this rumor Nikon ZR might bring to the table.
