- Nissan introduces three new EVs in 2026
- The magazine loses its hatchback -styling as it is aimed at the SUV market
- New Micra will be based on Renault 5
Despite being among the first to produce a mass market electric car in the original magazine, Nissan has been relatively slow with electrifying his line-up, with only Ariya offering something new in recent years.
That’s all changing as the Japanese company revealed that the next 12 months will be choc full of new EV releases. These will include the long-awaited third generation of Nissan Leaf as well as an electrical update of the popular Micra and Juke models to Europe.
Following the trend for chunky, high-ridden vehicles, Nissan has chosen to ditch the traditional hatchback silhouette of the old magazine in favor of a more popular SUV body style. It will share the same basic submissions as Ariya running on the same CMF-EV platform.
According to Autocar, Nissan’s European Product Manager, François Bailly, said the company aimed at a number of more than 372 miles, with an important focus on longer journeys and an aerodynamic form that requires fewer motorway breaks when covering great distances.
For North American customers, the third generation of the magazine comes with a NACS charging sport, which means customers will be able to make use of the Tesla Supercharger network-long from the outdated Chaado charging standard used by the older magazine.
To further strengthen its electric line-up, Nissan also revealed a smart new version of the diminished and affordable Micra, which will be based on the same platform as Renault 5.
According to Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s global design manager, the electric Micra was always designed to be “Cutter” than the more aggressive Renault 5, Sporting Rounder “Puppy-Dog headlights”, he said Autocar.
It borrows elements from the ultra-aggressive concept 20-23, which was revealed, surprisingly, in 2023. The most obvious is the round LED headlight. Although the huge back wing, wild body sets and railway attitude seems to be softened something.
Analysis: Nissan returns to his innovative roots
I think even Nissan will agree that the last few years have been quiet for the brand focusing on e-power hybrid versions of existing models that make up the majority of its ‘exciting’ new releases.
Wind back to 2023, and the company was busy celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nissan Design Europe in London with Madcap 20-23 concept as well as promising more creative and innovative EVs as the company changed against a fully electrified line-up.
Only now is Nissan doing well with these promises, with two beautiful EVs designed to be practical, affordable and offering the kind of reach, which means most owners do not have to compromise.
In addition to Micra and LEAF, the company also reveals the third generation of Juke-SUV in 2026, with styling, apparently affected by its Angular Hyper Punk concept from the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
The original Juke encapsulated the brand’s fearlessness with polarizing styling that combined elements of jet skiing, motorcycles, sports cars and all kinds of hip and design features. It has sold well in Europe for well over a decade and is still an integral part of Nissan-Line-Up.
But compared to like Kia, Hyundai, Peugeot and Citroen, Nissan lacks a modern line-up of both electric and hybrid vehicles that stand out from the crowd. Peugeot, on the other hand, offers nine EVs in Europe, which includes hatchbacks, SUVs, real estate cars and vans.
By strengthening its line-up with attractive and affordable electric vehicles that riff on some of the concepts that have got us all enthusiastically, it feels as if Nissan is finally coming back to its bold and innovative best.
