Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates met in each team’s second-to-last regular seasonal series on Thursday.
The Reds went into the game after Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs – two teams that have already clucked playoff bunks – in the National League Central position. The pirates have long been removed from strife after the season, but Reds’ Playoff -Hope remains alive.
A Red’s loss on Thursday could have been a devastating blow to the team’s hope after the season. Red’s third Baseman Noelvi Marte did his part to prevent it from happening.

Pirates right Fielder Bryan Reynolds looked to hit a game-binding home drive in the ninth lap, but Marte pulled out a height-worthy catch to record the game’s last.
Cincinnati was in danger of a three-game sweeping, but Marte’s catch and his RBI singles in the fifth round helped the reds to avoid that accident. Outfielder Gavin Lux ran in Reds’ second race later in the same round.

The 2-1 loss also marked Pirates 90. Defeat of the season.

“It was a fantastic baseball series,” said Pirates Manager Don Kelly. “Well played on both sides – the defensive effort, pitching effort, offensively, finding ways to get through. Bryan should have, could have tied it up, Marte is pulling it back. … it was an endgame statmosphere and I thought we answered really, really well.”

The pirates begin their last series in the regular season of 2025 Friday in Atlanta against Braves.
