- NordVPN has just opened its Linux Graphical User Interface (GUI) Application
- Users will now be able to inspect and contribute to the code and help Linux Gui develop
- Linux GUI is now also available as part of Nordvpns Snap package that simplifies the installation
NordVPN has taken another step towards transparency by opening its Linux Graphical User Interface (GUI) app.
This means that everyone can now see the code and find new ways to build on it and customize it.
The code is already public on Github. This refers to the entire code base for NordVPN’s graphic use together with building instructions.
The company has also updated its SNAP package to include the GUI application. This change makes NordVPN both easier to access and more convenient to use for the Linux community.
The move follows an increase in the Linux adoption among NordVPN users since Gui’s debut earlier this year. It also signalizes NordVPN’s wider movement towards openness, which is one of the reasons why it is the best VPN in our extensive location.
NordVPN presses on for transparency and availability
“Because Linux thrives on transparency and shared craftsmanship, we open our gui so society can see it, shape it and help Nordvpn.
The shift towards Open Source started in 2023 when the company opened the code for its Linux Command-Line Interface (CLI) app. However, it was the move to GUI that got the Linux adoption really hovered, with a 70% increase in just 100 days since it was introduced.
Because Linux users really embraced Nordvpns easier to use, more accessible GUI, the company hopes that community contributions will make the function even better.
“We welcome contributions and will keep iterating with the community to build the best VPN client at Linux,” Biedis adds.
It is important to note that although GUI and CLI are now open source, the central VPN infrastructure in NordVPN remains secret. This ensures that in its official announcement, NordVPN ensures that the backbone of the app and its approval systems remain as secure as ever.
With both GUI and CLI, which is now open source, the NordVPN has also made the GUI app easier to install on Linux PCs as it is now available via the SNAP package.
This means that any Linux user can now install the VPN app with a single command and keep up to date automatically.
What’s coming then?
However, NordVPN has plans beyond today’s launch.
Big news: Meshnet remains. After hearing from our society, we have turned the decision on Sunset Meshnet.Link up to 60 units safely. Open-sourcing is coming.Meshnet remains just as you know. Thank you for sharing your feedback and helping us shape the future. pic.twitter.com/vpnantrqxiOctober 2, 2025
The company also intends to make its meshnet function open source as well.
Meshnet is NordVPN’s feature that allows you to create a virtual network. In this network you can link up to 60 different devices, regardless of their location.
This is a surprising message, given that Meshnet was intended to go offline in December 2025. However, the user feedback Nordvpn convinced to leave it, and like Linux Gui, it may still thrive on contributions from a dedicated society.
