- Nvidia could have a new spin on its RTX 5090 graphics card
- This is rumored to be a new version of RTX 5090 D for China
- A delicious says it will pack a ‘surprise’ but the truth can be more mundane
NVIDIA was rumored to plan a new variant on its Blackwell flagship graphics card, potentially an RTX 5090 DD model -and it could come with a ‘surprise’ according to a delicious.
Toms Hardware marked two separate mentions of this potential GPU (add spices with all this) on X, the first of which came from Megasizegpu, which mentioned the RTX 5090 DD and how it will only be for China.
So the theory is that this is a follow-up of the RTX 5090 D (single d, not double d) for China, another spin on the standard Blackwell flagship produced for this country to get around us export rules.
Apart from the target posts on these restrictions, have been moved, and now precludes the RTX 5090 D even as too powerful (to AI use) to be sent to China. It seems that the idea now is to further reduce the graphics card to make it possible to deliver to Asia again and call it RTX 5090 DD.
The alleged cutting specifications were provided by another regular on GPU-covering scene on X, Copit7kimi, as you can see below.
RTX 5090 DD? PG145-SKU40GB202-240-K*-A121760FP32384-BIT GDDR7 24G 28GBPS575WAND there is a surprise.June 18, 2025
The most important changes are a slightly lower level GPU chip (GB202-240, rather than the GB202-250, as seen in the original 5090 d), and video RAM has been dropped to 24 GB with a narrower 384-bit memory bus.
This means a 25% hit on the memory bandwidth compared to the RTX 5090 D, but the core number and TDP remain the same (the latter is interesting and I will return to why cards).
Toms Hardware takes it as read that these two rumors are fully adapted and they are from what we can see special-but Note that copy7kimi has a question mark that goes up on their post on X that begins: ‘RTX 5090 DD?’
However, this probably refers to question the name, and whether this will really be called RTX 5090 DD, rather than doubt whether this is actually a new spin on an only graphics card with China. Although we should never take anything for granted from the rumor, and maybe the latter could be the case.
In any case, the most exciting bit here is the copy7kimi’s mention of a “surprise” from Nvidia with this GPU.
Analysis: Let Guess Games begin
When it comes to the name, yes, it makes ‘DD’ sounds pretty unlikely, but remember – this is the company that brought you the RTX 4070 Ten Super Graphics card (and similar clumsy bouts of unimaginative in the past as well).
As mentioned, the surprise is what we really want to know about, and copy7kimi does not elaborate on what it might be with any kind of a guard tip, even. So we are left to guess that score.
Toms Hardware theorizes that the surprise could be further cut to the AI forces on the graphics card delivered via the firmware and that sounds quite possible. But that sounds totally DullAnd the way the delicious teases that “there is a surprise” feels like it’s formulated to make some excitement here. A minor chop for AI capabilities hardly qualifies in that regard, but what else could Nvidia may have up on the sleeve here?
To me, this suggests that Nvidia is planning a step like cutting the price of RTX 5090 DD. Or maybe most exciting that also offers it outside China? Yes, okay, it seems unlikely (although it is as noticed, with this question mark, it may be that copy7kimi is not quite sure that this is the said Chinese variant). Maybe more realistically we could look at a fair old bump in watch speeds (hence TDP, which remains the same where the specen was cut into some key areas).
Hopefully we will find out soon enough what Nvidia might be on here, if something, as this all could turn out to be so much smoke from the rumor mill (or plans from Team Green that never come to execution).
