Opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan called for Chief Justice Yahya Afridi on Tuesday to intervene in the ongoing 9 May trials and claims of constitutional and procedural violations against Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) leaders.
In a letter dated July 27, 2025, Ayub called the attempts ‘politically motivated’ and accused anti -terror herds for dangerous procedures at odd hours and refused fair court rights and legal advice.
He also claimed that the consultations often continued from early in the morning to 1 p.m. 3:00, undermined both the Court’s transparency and exhausting defendant and lawyers.
The opposition leader also claimed that fours were manufactured, interrogations were coercion, and PTI leaders were selectively targeted. He also criticized the refusal of media access and exclusion of family members from the courtroom.
He quoted constitutional provisions and the Supreme Court’s precedent and urged the right to review the behavior of the trial, restore open access and stop sessions beyond reasonable hours.
Ayub also requested a legal investigation into the prosecutor’s office.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court postponed the hearing of bail reports filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan until August 12.
