The tech world was rocked yesterday by a report from Android Headlines that OnePlus was being ‘dismantled’ by parent company Oppo – but today we have official word that rumors of OnePlus’ death are rife.
OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu took to social media (via Android Authority ) to say that the company is “operating as usual and will continue to do so”. He described the leaks surrounding OnePlus’ closure as “false” and “unfounded”.
And here at TechRadar, we’re very happy to hear it: we’ve been covering the OnePlus brand since it launched its very first phone way back in 2014, and we recently awarded the OnePlus 15, which launched last year and topped our list of the best Android phones, a whopping five stars out of five.
As you may recall, Oppo and OnePlus merged in 2021, with OnePlus being sub-branded. Since then, we’ve seen several similarities between phones from Oppo and OnePlus (and Realme, which Oppo also owns) – but OnePlus devices remain separate.

The original Android Headline report points to several signs that OnePlus operations are winding down, including low levels of phone shipments across the globe and cutbacks in marketing activities outside of China.
According to analysts, OnePlus phone sales fell to around 13-14 million in 2024, down from 17 million the previous year. Meanwhile, Oppo sales have increased over the same period, which could be a reason why the company is shutting down OnePlus operations.
There is still some uncertainty about the future of OnePlus outside of China and India. For example, the brand doesn’t have any carrier partnerships in the US, and previous leaks have suggested that the OnePlus Open 2 and OnePlus 15s may both have been cancelled.
Hopefully OnePlus continues to operate globally and offer some much-needed competition to Apple, Samsung and Google – its latest flagship is high up on our list of best smartphones, and we’d certainly miss the brand if it disappeared.
