- The UK Government signs a greater agreement with Openai to insert more AI
- GPT is already driving Humphrey and consulting services, with more coming
- Openai also extends its British offices
Openai and the British Government have signed an appointment morandum as part of a plan to “maintain a world-leading UK AI-ecosystem that is rooted in democratic values.”
The deal will see Openai exploring investments in UK AI-Infrastructure, including data centers and so-called AI growth zones, which could smooth the game throughout the UK with places in Scotland and Wales.
Through the Memorandum of Understanding, the British government hopes to deploy AI across justice, defense, education and public services to improve efficiency.
The British government doubles on AI
Openai’s technology already forms the basis for a number of British government tools, including the chatgpt-enhanced Humphrey for Civil Service Workers and GPT 4o-enhanced consultation for politics.
British technology secretary Peter Kyle welcomed the cooperation with the world-leading AI company: “AI will be fundamental to driving the change we need to look all over the country-either in solving the NHS, breaking down barriers to opportunities or driving economic growth.”
“Britain has a strong heritage of scientific leadership, and its government was one of the first to recognize the potential of AI through its AI options for action plan,” Openai CEO Sam Altman added.
The United Kingdom has already promised to invest “Up to £ 500 million” to support sovereign AI, and has wider plans described in its AI Action Plan, which says Britain is the third largest AI market globally behind the US and China.
Looking ahead, AI growth zones will facilitate the construction and implementation of AI centers through priority access to sustainable energy sources and a combination of public and private partnerships.
More broadly, Openai also plans to increase its presence in the UK by expanding its office footprint in London – its first international office.
