Islamabad:

The opposition alliance under the banner of Tehreek-E-Tahaffuz-E-Oyeen-E-Pakistan (TTAP) has announced that it will begin its highly left protest movement with a public rally in Islamabad on April 20, setting the stage for a fresh political confrontation against the ruling PML-N-joint coalition.

According to TTAP spokesman Akhunzada Yousafzai, the rally will host Majlis Wahdat-E-Muslime (MWM) and takes place in the G-9 area of the capital.

The spokesman said that prominent opposition figures, including TTAP and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party Chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as well as Senior Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) leadership, will tackle the collection and say invitations will also be extended to other opposition parties to participate in Rally.

The announcement has come a few weeks after opposition parties completed a two-day multi-party conference, which served as a precursor to the protest drive.

The conference culminated with a statement that required supremacy of the constitution, immediate release of political prisoners, fresh choices, and cancellation of what it called “unpublished changes” introduced by the current government.

Despite growing momentum, the alliance continues to fight with internal challenges, where the boss among them is the reluctance of Jamiat Disadvanta-e-Islam Fazl (Jui-F) to formally participate in the movement. Jui-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has so far detained his support, referring to concern over PTI’s decision structure in the absence of his imprisoned founder, Imran Khan.

While PTI leaders were previously hopeful that Jui-F can get on board after Eid, a formal agreement has not yet been reached.

Insiders say that most differences between PTI and Jui-F are resolved, but the question of who will lead the alliance in Khan’s absence remains unresolved. FAZL reportedly insists that any PTI representative leading the movement should be granted full authority, something PTI has struggled to secure due to limited access to Imran Khan.
