- Openai limits free level of chatgpt to 3 pictures a day
- Sam Altman says “Our GPUs melt”
- Limitation must be temporarily
In the midst of the growing controversy over its AI, which mimics the artistic style of Studio Ghibli, Openai is forced to limit how many pictures Chatgpt can produce at the free level to 3 a day because it turns out to be popular.
In a recent tweet about X, Sam Altman, CEO of Openai, said, “It’s super fun to watch people love pictures in chatgpt, but our GPUs are melting. We will temporarily introduce some speed limits while working to make it more effective. Hopefully will not be long! Chatgpt free level will get 3 generations a day soon.”
It’s super fun to see people love pictures in chatgpt. But our GPUs melt. We will temporarily introduce some rate boundaries as we work to make it more efficient. Hopefully you won’t be long! Chatgpt free level will soon get 3 generations a day.March 27, 2025
Chatgpt’s new image generation features are clearly a step up in the development of AI image generation, which turns out to be superior in our test for Dall-E 3, which is the model previously used by Chatgpt, and also what it still wants to default on once you have run out of generations in the new model.
In its X-Thread Sam Altman also says that “(also we refuse some generations that must be allowed; we solve these as soon as we can.)”
This could explain the frustrations I have experienced getting chatgpt to produce text in images.
Chatgpt Rollout delays
It is very possible that you do not have access to Chatgpt’s tools for creating image creation yet. While Chatgpt Plus and Pro users all seem to have access doesn’t make all free-tier users.
On March 26, Altman tweeted that roll -out to the free level should be delayed: “Pictures in Chatgpt are far more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations). Rollout to our free level is unfortunately delayed for a while.”
As we have said in our tests, even at the Plus level, Chatgpt is already very slow when it comes to generating images and when the rollout to the free level is complete, we would expect it to be even slower. The move to limit the free level to 3 images temporarily, while understandable, will inevitably lead to people feeling frustrated by the business.
