- Business leaders want to improve and not replace existing systems
- Martin emphasizes it’s software development not AI that makes the magic
- No clear consensus about the impact of AI between industry leaders
At the recent Outsystems an event, there was a lot of hype about how much agentic AI will transform industries.
The company announced the general availability of the agent’s work bench at the event, but there was no clear consensus between industry leaders about how deep the impact of AI will resonate.
In an interview with Techradar Pro, the company’s CEO Woodson Martin emphasized caution at AI -Hyperbole and noticed “I haven’t met a single CIO saying my goal is to replace all my existing systems with something new built by an AI. Nobody says it.”
AI uncertainty
Martin took a more temperate tone focusing on using the technology to help companies get to the future faster instead of replacing systems completely.
It is not only employees who face uncertainty in AI’s age, but the question of whether software development companies still have space in a world where entire applications can be created with a single prompt is also on the table.
Martin added, “I think we’re a little irrational exuberant in the industry today about AI’s potential to change everything and throw away everything we’ve ever done to replace it all with something new? This overrun is real.”
“Will it be a complete and total revolution and everything? No.”
People don’t appreciate the work that developers make AI look good
Rick Hoebée, IT Director at Travel Essence, predicted under a panel that “90% of the desktop work will be replaced by AI agents for the next three years”, while other leaders at the event emphasized the importance of human centered operations with AI in business.
Instead, Martin explained what business leaders really want – which is to use this new technology to iter over the top of existing systems and data codes to drive better productivity.
“And then I think the revolution is a bit oversold right now, but I think the real business impact will be driven in layers. And I think this layer of AI and agent over the top of assets already in Enterprise is the real value history here.”
Martin also explained that AI is just the tip of the iceberg that described how we see AI doing incredible things but does not appreciate what is happening below the surface.
Included the full life cycle management of all applications within a company with APIs and data storage and notes, “It’s like, woo, look at AI that makes all the magic up here. But under the tires there is a lot of hard work.”
While the message at Outsystems had a slight duality for it with Agentic AI that changed everything, and nothing at once there was a clear message and that is that if a company wants to create an agent, Outsystems wants to be the company that helps do it with the Agent WorkBench platform.
The Outsystem’s one event was full of successful case studies of AI agents who improved workflows, unlocking data and maximizing efficiency, all of which translated into better experiences for end users.
So whether the AI revolution is oversold or not, I’m happy to buy into it.
