PA Seeking Bikameral System in Punjab

The Punjab assembly, with a majority vote, adopted a decision that required a change in the constitution to establish a parliamentary system in Punjab corresponding to the National Assembly and the Senate at the Federal Level.

The resolution, jointly presented by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its allied Pakistan Peoples People (PPP), highlighted Punjab’s massive population stating that only 11 nations among 171 countries have a larger population than Punjab.

Given this demographic size, the decision emphasized the need for broader representation of experts and professionals in administrative affairs and decision -making.

Although the current constitutional framework does not contain such a system, Parliament called on the federal government to introduce the necessary changes to allow Punjab to have a parliamentary system such as the Federation.

In a separate decision, legislators unanimously condemned the recent Bannu attack and expressed their unwavering support for Pakistan’s armed forces and recognized their victims to maintain national security.
