Islamabad:
Over 130 countries condemned the Pahagam attack in the Indian-ly-one-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and expressed solidarity with New Delhi. Still, India is upset.
Despite world leaders, including an India’s closest Allied United States, the Pahagam attack, they did not stop accusing Pakistan -the last thing the modi government wanted.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with many world leaders and tried to convince them that the attack on tourists had a Pakistani footprint. Diplomats sent in New Delhi were informed by the Ministry of External Affairs and built a case against Pakistan.
However, none of the countries were convinced and refrained from approving the Indian attitude. So much, the Trump administration, which includes officials considered close to India, wanted to see compelling evidence before blaming Pakistan.
President Donald Trump’s statement was a shock to India who expected an explicit support from the United States. Instead, Trump was of the opinion that he was close to both India and Pakistan and that he knew Kashmir was a long -term topic.
A member of the American think tank told The Express Pakinomist that Trump’s attitude was contrary to otherwise close strategic partnership with India. The broader interpretation of President Trump’s statement is that he looks at the Pahagam attack not as a pure terrorist incident, but in the context of Kashmir. “It’s a deadly blow to the Indian tale,” noted the American expert who was of the opinion that New Delhi would have an explicit support from Washington, Branding Pakistan as sponsor of this attack.
Diplomats informed by the Indian Foreign Secretary of the Pahagam attack reported back to their respective governments that New Delhi had not yet presented clear evidence of Pakistan’s commitment. Some of them told the New York Times that India built its case based on Pakistan’s previous support for groups active in the disputed Kashmir region.
Part of the reason why the outside world, especially the western countries, did not jump the gun or ready to support India as regards its accusations against Pakistan, was the modi government’s own track record.
Under Modi’s clock, Indian secret services performed extracurricular killings in Canada and made a failed attempt in the United States. These episodes created distrust between India and the West. The second factor was the haste that India began to blame Pakistan within hours of the attack.
International media as well as diplomatic missions followed close to the development that unfolded after the attack. Many come to the conclusion that the Modi government seems to have developed a template to use such attacks to take political mileage by accusing Pakistan, even without evidence.
Pakistan meanwhile, not only condemned the attack, but offered to participate in any “neutral, transparent and credible” investigation.
China was the first country to support Pakistan’s attitude, while it is believed that Russia also supported the idea of impartial study.
The lack of evidence also helped Pakistan draw a larger diplomatic victory at UNSC as it issued a statement condemning the Pahaldam incident. When the first draft was circulated among the 15 members, there were certain references involving Pakistan. However, Pakistan managed to convince other members to bring the necessary changes that omitted controversial parts.
An official said Pakistan was able to convince other members, including powerful players because they also knew India had no clear evidence of Islamabad’s commitment.
