Pakistan has closed the Torkham border transition with Afghanistan after the Afghan Taliban authorities began “Construction of trenches and other development work” near the border, a senior Pakistani police officer said on Sunday.

The transition was closed late Friday night and suspended all pedestrian and trade movement between the two neighboring countries, although no three-seven reports have been reported.

“The [Torkham crossing] is closed for both pedestrians and heavy vehicles since 12 on the night of February 21st. No firing is reported from any of the pages, “said Naheed Khan, a senior police officer in Pakistan’s Khyber district.

Residents of Bacha Mina, a village near the border on the Pakistani side, have begun to travel to safer places as a caution, while some loaded trucks have returned to Jamud Bazaar, according to Khan. There has been no immediate reaction from Afghan authorities regarding the closure.

The move is in the midst of rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over an increase in militant attacks in Pakistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of having had militant groups launching cross -border attacks denies a claim that Afghan officials deny.

In recent months, boundary visions have led to the closure of key crossings and severely disturbed trade and movement. In August, the Torkham border was closed for three days after the Afghan Taliban accused Pakistani fighter jets of violating the Afghan airspace.

Tensions flared again in December after reported Pakistani air strikes on alleged militant hiding places in Afghanistan, which Kabul claimed resulted in civilian losses.
