Pakistan, Egypt pledge closer military cooperation during Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Cairo

COAS calls Egypt “a brotherly country” and says cooperation will help achieve peace and stability in the region

Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir is on an official visit to Egypt with the aim of strengthening military and defense cooperation between the two countries, the military’s media wing said on Thursday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Munir met the Egyptian Minister of Defense and Defense Production, General Abdul Maged Saqar and the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Khalifa Fatehi.

The statement added that the discussions focused on “issues of common interest, the regional security situation and bilateral defense cooperation.”

Field Marshal Munir described Egypt as “a brotherly country,” adding, “cooperation between both states will not only benefit the people of both nations, but will also contribute to achieving peace and stability in the region.”

At the Defense Ministry, the Pakistani army chief was received with a guard of honor and later laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and former Egyptian President Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat. As part of his engagements, Field Marshal Munir also met Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, at Mashaikhat Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the statement added.

The grand imam shared his views on the challenges facing the Muslim world, while Pakistan’s army chief stressed the need to counter “extremist ideologies and distorted interpretations of Islam.” The visit underscores Pakistan’s growing diplomatic and defense ties with Egypt, which have been enhanced through high-level exchanges and training cooperation between the armed forces of both nations.
